We are so glad you stopped by to check out our blog! Read on to find the answer to some of your burning questions...
What are you guys doing?
For this semester we will be encountering Desmond’s unique perspective on our assigned topics in Units 1, 2, and 3 from our ENGL 102 class at UNC-Chapel Hill. The first unit will challenge natural science by exploring the controversies and viewpoints in science. Unit 2 will be a case study on the basis of research methods of behavioral psychology. The last unit will serve as a connection to the other two units; determining if there are such things as “proof” and “facts” in humanities.
Along with Desmond’s posts (complied by our team), each team member will respond to Desmond’s posts individually. The comments by our group will represent not only our viewpoints, but others. Each comment will be supported with details and facts.
Check out the units on our class’ website: http://www.unc.edu/~dlupton/1207/
Who is Desmond?

Along with Desmond’s-- ahem-- opinionated posts, each member of our group will respond with their own comments, challenging or agreeing with Desmond.
We encourage others to comment and get involved with this imaginative character and have fun with us! Your comments will help us make this blog a success. We look forward to seeing your responses!
Okay, so you guys are Desmond... but who is "Desmond?"
Desmond is a 60 year-old Australian man. He was one of the first students to attend the Australian National University (ASU) when it opened. Though ASU is ranked as
In his own words, Desmond explains,
“I am all for educating one’s self. That is why I left the unis. I didn’t feel that I could successfully liberate my mind enough to fully explore and attain the education that I wanted.”
Desmond’s I.Q. has been ranked off the charts by several international intelligent tests. Many of
A few years ago, Desmond pushed a fish and chips cart across the shore of Wollongong. After two months, Desmond could no longer live off the money he made from fish and chips, so he moved to the relaxing sands of Broulee, a costal town 2 hours outside of Canberra, New South Wales, Australia. In Broulee, Desmond opened his own bar, Shark Biscuits, in 2000.
Desmond currently resides in an apartment over Shark Biscuits, which has been a very popular tourist spot. Despite not having a college education, Desmond is well respected by his loyal customers. As one customer explains, “It’s not the drinks that we come here for. It’s the viewpoints that Desmond has on various subjects. I mean, he’s like a mastermind or something.”
Desmond spends his days surfing the shoreline of Broulee, bartending his well-stocked bar, creating new drinks, and of course-- keeping up with his blog! He also actively participates in soul searching and surfing pipelines while observing his customers.

It was very creative to evolve your blog around a character. It ligthens up the mood and provides a kind of outside view of your groups work. I also like how you chose to present information about each other. This blog really got my attention and I think you all are going to get a lot of feedback from others outside of class
The whole idea to use a character for your blog is something over my head as far as creativity, but I really like the idea. The character, Desmond, appears to be a comic relief, which will help with the mood of the blog. I look forward to reading your responses to his opinionated posts. The best part about your character is that he reminds me of one of my high school classmates. He would say the most brilliant things - things that I could never come up with - but he struggled in school.
I liked the blog. Really appealing and creative and I'm sure the audience will appreciate the theme. Your setup was nice; looks like someone has blogged before. Besides the fact that Bernardo's favorite sporting team is the New York Yankees, I can't really complain about this blog.
hahaha i really love this! i think it's great that you put your blog throught he eyes of someone else, it's a good way to collaborate all of your works! i'm impressed
I find your blog to be one of extreme intelligence and creativity. Since I have personally met and had an intimate relationship with Desmond, your desire to capture his intermost
views, thoughts, motives are a remarkable journey to take on!
what a kick in the ass young group you are..I say...."its about time someone really heard things HIS way!" he certainly can lighten the load, mood and any other political savy that may present itself during your project..as Desmond always says "whatever you do, wherever you are, and whom ever you believe yourself to be..ENJOY the journey".
Great first post, everyone. As you know, I'm highly impressed with your character-based approach and I'm looking forward to seeing how it evolves over the course of the semester. You've done a lot of thinking and planning about your blog's approach and it shows.
I do, however, have some criticisms. While it's clear that you put a lot of work into formatting, I'm not sure I agree with all of your choices. The vast expanses of empty space between paragraphs were distracting, and some of the colored text was disorienting. In some cases I thought the text were links, but they didn't show up as such. You need to be conscious of general web conventions such as using colored text for links. In addition, I liked the fact that you tried to credit the sources of your photos, but I don't think the links you provided were adequate. Sure, I can see exactly where you downloaded the picture, but who took the pictures? You don't really give them credit or even explain who they are if I wanted to find out more about them. However, these are things we'll work on all semester.
I also enjoyed your bios, and even though they were shorter than your classmates' you managed to convey a lot of your personality. I'd love to know what underground metal you're into, Tilman, and Ashley your birthday is the day before mine!
Great job!
Also, did one of you leave the anonymous comment? I'm curious...
